New Orleans Baptist Ministries was founded in 2003 by the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention to “engage in activities and ministries and operate missions for needy, homeless, destitute…persons in New Orleans.”  Churches, caring tangibly for their most underserved neighbors in the name of Jesus.  The original plan was to build a housing development in the 9th Ward of New Orleans to include a school, a health clinic, a volunteer center—but Hurricane Katrina, two years later in 2005, changed the housing landscape entirely, changed the need, and changed every plan.  For years we coordinated faith-based housing rebuild efforts throughout the entire region, only to return, a decade later, to a little bit of where we started.  At the time, the entire nation seemed to be building housing in the ninth ward, but those of us living in the neighborhood had no health care, no doctors, not even a pharmacy.  Ask yourself, always: why is this the need, and what is the next right step to meet it?  We founded Baptist Community Health Services in 2014, which is now an FQHC serving seven locations and growing to meet the needs of the region—still the only medical provider in the lower ninth ward, providing primary care, peds, school-based care, and mental healthcare in multiple languages.  We still minister to survivors in the wake of natural disaster, too, but we never forgot where we came from, and much of our effort today is aimed at meeting the deep need of our most underserved neighbors, preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ as he did: in word and in deed. Today we look to the future and envision a new era of urban compassion ministry in a world class facility featuring a medical complex, vocational training, and programing for children, youth, and adults.
